The ABCs of RVs
While somewhat technical, it is useful to understand the official RV classification terms and why many choose a Class B over the other options.
Class A
The big bus RVs
-
The largest and often most luxurious type of RV, built on a bus or specially designed motor vehicle chassis.
-
Spacious interiors, often equipped with residential-style kitchens, bathrooms, large living areas, and bedrooms. High-end amenities such as washers/dryers, entertainment systems, and multiple slide-outs are common
-
Ideal for larger families, those seeking maximum comfort and amenities on the road, and those who stick to major roads, highways and campgrounds.
Class B
Van campers
-
The smallest type of motorhome built on a van chassis.
-
Compact and efficient use of space, typically including a small kitchen, wet bathroom, and sleeping area. Easier to drive and park compared to larger RVs and can travel to remote locations in light to moderate off road conditions.
-
Ideal for solo travelers, couples, or small families looking for a versatile and maneuverable vehicle for travel, event attendance, outdoor hobbies and even as a second daily driver.
Class C
The middle child
-
Mid-sized RVs built on a truck or van "cut" chassis, typically with a distinctive over-cab sleeping area. So called Class B+ RVs don't have an over-cab bunk but are still Class Cs.
-
A good balance of space and amenities, typically including a kitchen, bathroom, sleeping areas, and often slide-outs for additional space. More spacious than Class Bs and easier to handle than Class A.
-
Ideal for families or groups who need more space than a Class B but want a vehicle that’s easier to drive than a Class A.
